Here's an exciting update from the City that directly affects the look and feel of our neighborhoods. Newport News has officially launched the Good Neighbor Patrol Vehicle — a smart, community-focused initiative designed to help keep our streets cleaner, our properties safer, and our neighborhoods more welcoming.

What Is the Good Neighbor Patrol Vehicle?

It's a specially equipped city vehicle that drives through our neighborhoods and uses exterior-mounted cameras to document potential property maintenance issues that are visible from public streets and sidewalks. Think of it as a friendly, watchful neighbor making rounds for the good of the whole community.

Mayor Phillip Jones put it best:

"This is the next step in turning policy into progress. Residents told us that run-down and poorly maintained properties hurt their neighborhoods. City Council listened, acted, and now we're delivering solutions on the ground."

What Kind of Issues Does It Look For?

The vehicle is designed to spot common code violations such as:

🌿 Overgrown grass, weeds, or vegetation
🗑️ Trash, debris, or discarded items in yards or driveways
🚗 Abandoned or inoperable vehicles visible from the street
🏚️ Peeling paint, broken windows, or damaged exterior coverings
🚧 Fences, sheds, or other structures that are leaning or unsafe
🏠 Unsecured or deteriorating vacant buildings

What Happens If a Violation Is Found?

Finding an issue does not mean immediate enforcement. A Codes Compliance inspector will first verify the issue in person. If confirmed, the property owner will receive a written notice and has 30 days to correct the problem before any enforcement action is taken. The process is fair, consistent, and respectful.

The program was launched in direct response to feedback from the 2024 Community Survey, in which 88% of residents rated tackling neglected and vacant properties as a top priority — yet only 17% were satisfied with progress. The City heard you, and now it's taking action.
