We have some wonderful news to share with our community today. The Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom Library, a staple of our neighborhood for decades, is finally getting a complete transformation!

Goodbye Sherwood, Hello Grissom Library!

The City of Newport News has officially announced the start of demolition for the long-vacant Sherwood Shopping Center. In its place, the city will construct the brand-new Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom Library.

The current Grissom Library first opened its doors back in 1977. For over 45 years, it has served as a center for learning and recreation for our residents. However, as our community grows and technology evolves, a modernized and expanded facility has become a top priority.

What to Expect from the New Library

The scale of the new facility is truly impressive:

Size: The new library will span 51,144 square feet, which is more than three times the size of the existing building (approx. 16,635 sq. ft.).
Investment: This is a major $40 million project aimed at revitalizing our community infrastructure.
